The PADI Assistant Instructor program can be included in a full Instructor Development Program (IDC), or can be taught as a standalone course. Once you have completed your Assistant Instructor Program and gained skills and confidence teaching with other PADI Instructors, you may move on to the PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program, attend an Instructor Examination (IE), and become an Open Water Scuba Instructor. If you decide you like to be an Assistant Instructor, there is no pressure to move on to become an OWSI!

 

As a PADI Assistant Instructor candidate, you get:

  • Hands-on experience building the skills and confidence to teach with other PADI instructors, as well as on your own
  • To participate in skill reviews, skill assessments, skill workshops, and academic presentations with PADI Staff Instructors, Course Directors, and your fellow AI candidates.
  • Academic training to develop you into a quality Assistant Instructor candidate
  • Independent Study programs and knowledge reviews

As a PADI Assistant Instructor, you will be able to:

  • Teach academics under the direct supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • In confined water, present skills under direct supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Evaluate open water diver surface skills under indirect supervision of a PADI Instructor
  • Teach and certify divers in Peak Performance Buoyancy under the direct supervision of a PADI instructor
  • Teach and certify Project AWARE specialty courses, the Project AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Course, Conduct PADI Discover Scuba Dives in confined or open water, Conduct SealTeam Aqua Missions, teach PADI Digital Underwater Photographer specialty courses under the direction of a PADI Instructor after earning the PADI Digital Underwater Photographer Specialty Instructor rating
Prerequisites:
  • Must be 18 years old
  • Must have 60 logged dives
  • Must have been a certified diver for at least 6 months
  • Must have current CPR/First Aid certification (with proof)
  • Must be a PADI Divemaster or recognized certification agency equivalent
  • Must have an updated PADI Medical Form on file

It is recommended that you own your own gear for this course.
